U.S. Census stats reveal a few interesting details that might've flavored today's ER story a bit differently if they'd been included.
"Ten-year Humboldt County employee Kim Kerr confirmed Tuesday that she has taken a job as city manager of Ione, a municipality of roughly 7,500 residents located halfway between Sacramento and Stockton."
7,500 is a bit of an overstatement, but that's not the juicy part. Check this out: Ione's population is 80 percent male! But ladies, don't start packing -- no, the reason so many men reside in Ione is not an especially enlightened attitude toward homosexual men, but the fact that of the 7,129 residents, over 4,000 of'em are incarcerated. (The underage portion of those are here.)
So, if one County employee moves to a town of over 7,000 but over half of those residents are in correctional institutions, how many people will she truly manage?
Ms. Muller obtained population information from the City of Ione – information more current than the 2,000 census, she explained. We can dig that.
So of those additional 500 (or thereabouts) new residents, how many are town citizens and how many are new prisoners? We wonder.
And one more clarification – the numbers intrigue us, but we wish Ms. Kerr the best. Those summers'll be quite a change.

Kim is leaving because this area has become a hellhole. Too bad, because she is incredibly talented and smart.
If that's the case, living in a town where over half the population is in prison should feel nice and safe. Just like a big, warm blanket.
Can't say for sure, but I do know that the county just lost a great person due to the fact that this area has gone to pot. (excuse the pun!)
What issues are you claiming are behind Kerr's decision to leave? Marijuana? You're joking, or blowing smoke.
Her issues are that the place has gone to hell and she is done with it. And it has gone to hell for a lot of reasons - crime is one of them.
Crime in Eureka sucks, so she is moving to a city populated by convicts and the families of convicts? Do you read your theories before you post them?
Maybe she is a ghost hunter infatuated with the etheric vapor of Mary Phelps that haunts the Hotel Ione. That sounds as plausible, even if the hotel burned down in 1988 and was rebuilt in 1994. I'm sure the ghost stuck around during the 6 year lull. Yeah, that sounds as reasonable as any other idea floated here.
This is very sexist post, Postmaster. I for one hope you remove it before certain people sue you. One nice thing to help the situation would be to immediately stop hiding behind anonymity. We'll find out anyway, so don't make us all play the game. You can give it up on your own in your own way or you can be outed at some inconvenient time... your choice!
Maybe she actually wants to be a City Manager. You gotta start somewnere.
7:57 is just begging us to mention his name. Anonymous or not, you simply can't hide your delusional world from us.
Losing Kim Kerr is another serious blow to this county's legal system.
Ione has a fun old bar with dollar bills all over the ceiling. (How do they do that?) I think it has roots as a Chinese mining community. I don't recall a correctional facility nearby, but I do remember that it is flat there and has lots of radio towers.
